Fish & Ships! Outreach activities

Eat like a Georgian sailor! What did sailors eat for breakfast? How much beer did they drink a day? How did they fend-off the dreaded scurvy? Pupils from local primary schools have been finding out thanks to the Fish & Ships project. Combining science, geography and history, our Education team are visiting local schools to unravel the mysteries of food in the Georgian navy, equipped with our 'picnic hamper' of culinary curiosities.

Salt-pork, ship's biscuit, portable soup and carrot marmalade – see, smell, feel and even taste some authentic historic recipes. We've even been making some ship's biscuit of our own – don't forget to check for weevils!

So far, we've worked with 200 children across 3 local schools – pupils from East Whitby Community Primary donned sailors' outfits and got cooking. Whitby West Cliff held a foodie themed day with school chef Mrs Breckon’s award-winning Captain Cook lunch! The end of the summer term was celebrated in style at Ruswarp C of E Primary, when year 5 & 6 pupils ran an exclusive restaurant evening, serving a specially designed maritime menu to their teachers and parents, with a little help from local chef Mr Rob Green.

The Fish & Ships project is running until April 2013 – we'd love to reach as many schools and community groups as we can! If you would like us to visit your school or group, or if you want further information, please contact the museum on 01947 601900 or email cookmuseum@tiscali.co.uk. Sessions are adaptable and we can cater for all age-groups, including adults!
