Award-winning local artist Rachael Boddington presents another quirky craft workshop for children of all ages. Join in this giant game of magnetic fishing. Cast your line into the tank, catch, identify, decorate and take home your very own exotic fish!

Sat 14th April, 2-4 pm. 'How to knit an octopus' Workshop with Janina Emery.
Janina Emery, creator of our wacky seafood sandwiches, reveals the secrets of her knitted octopi in this fun, family-oriented workshop. Create an octopus to take home or donate it to our 'Great Sandwich Pic-Knit' exhibition! Suitable for all ages and abilities. Wool, needles and patterns provided.

Tues 5th June – Whitby Astronomical Society How to view the transit + planetarium show.
In preparation for this special event, Whitby Astronomical Society will be visiting the museum to explain all about the transit and demonstrate safe-viewing techniques, equipped with telescopes and planetarium show. A must for astronomical enthusiasts young and old!

Weds 11th April, 10am-1pm, Normanby Room, Whitby Museum Naval diets & vitamin testing demonstration with Alison Larkin.
Biologist Alison Larkin of Hull College investigates the truth about food at sea in the Georgian era in this interactive workshop. Using modern vitamin testing techniques and authentic naval fare, Alison will be finding out how bad the sailors' diet really was. Those with strong stomachs can even try a sample or two!

Tues 5th – Thurs 7th June Transit of Venus activities.
June 6th will mark the last in a lifetime chance to view a transit of the planet Venus across the sun. Learn how Captain Cook made an epic voyage to Tahiti to view the Transit in 1769 – join us in celebrating this rare astronomical occurrence!

Have a go at tying sailors' knots and see how rope is made with Norman's amazing rope -making machine.

Sat 8th/Sun 9th Sept 'Grub's up!' HMS Historical Cookery Demonstrations.
Our friends the Historical Maritime Society, a happy band of naval re-enactors, return to cook up a storm once more. Exotic foods are on the menu this time with bread fruit galore as well as traditional naval fare, cooked on an authentic wood-burning stove in the museum courtyard.

Sat 15th Sept 'Great Sandwich Pic-Knit' Finale & prize-giving!
The final display of knitted sandwiches will see your efforts well and truly rewarded as we serve up some great prizes. We will also welcome back celebrity guest knitter Dr Annie Shaw (Manchester School of Art), to act as chief sandwich judge. All welcome.
