Cook Museum Whitby

Awards Received

One of Britain’s Best!

Winner of VisitEngland Gold Award 2013 for the best small visitor attraction
Following success in Yorkshire’s White Rose Awards in 2012, we entered the national competition Visit England’s Awards for Excellence in 2013. There were 22 entrants in our category ‘Small Visitor Attraction of the Year’, mostly winners of their regional awards. We were delighted and honoured to receive the Gold Award! The citation read:

‘This building is the only authentic building in the world directly connected with Captain Cook. It is immaculately painted and very well presented. An enclosed courtyard bursting with colour from the flower beds provides a perfect spot for visitors to enjoy the view over the harbour. It is a tranquil little oasis in the centre of bustling Whitby. The Museum links place, person and period to create a unique visitor experience.’

The Judges’ Overall Summary read:
‘A unique and delightful experience when visiting this little ‘gem’. The atmosphere is immediately created in the inner courtyard and does not leave you until you eventually exit back into the street. Immaculately presented and interpreted displays, complemented by knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff ensure that visitors receive a very special experience. This is a must see Museum.’

Our White Rose awards
We have been fairly regular entrants in the White Rose Award for the Best Small Visitor Attraction. We won for the first time was in 2005, were a finalist in 2008, and won again in 2012.

We have full Accreditation from Arts Counci Englandl under the national scheme. We are also inspected every year by VAQAS, the national Visitor Attraction Quality Service, and have had extremely positive and helpful reports from it for many years.
